Tragically, suicide statistics regularly show us that the greatest risk for suicide amongst women is at its highest between the ages of 45-64. This alarming reality aligns with the emergence of a ‘missed generation’ of women who are only now being diagnosed with ADHD.
For decades, ADHD was misunderstood as predominantly affecting young boys, leaving countless women to navigate life undiagnosed. Many developed coping mechanisms that masked their symptoms, which often crumble as they enter midlife. This leads to an important intersection: the interplay of ADHD diagnoses and menopause.
Research increasingly suggests that hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause—such as declining estrogen—exacerbate ADHD symptoms. This, in turn, intensifies cognitive challenges like focus, memory, and emotional regulation. Notably, a recent study highlighted the link between menopause and increased suicidal ideation, emphasising the urgent need for targeted mental health support during this stage. The findings even raise a crucial question for future research: “Can cognitive complaints in midlife or menopausal women be treated successfully with psychostimulants?”
This intersection between ADHD, menopause, and mental health deserves far more attention. By fostering research and dialogue, we can break stigmas, advocate for effective treatments, and support women during this profoundly transformative stage of life. Let’s ensure that no woman feels overlooked or unsupported.
